Counseling is a lot like the Room of Requirement from Harry Potter. It shows up as being different for each person depending on what they need.
My clinical specialty is in treating trauma, however I also treat depression and anxiety. In fact, these things almost ALWAYS show up together. So the more we work through that terrible life event that happened, the more it will also address underlying worry, and sadness.
“Homework” may include watching selected movies/ tv episodes or discussing assigned graphic novels to help you understand your symptoms. It may also include more formalized trauma therapy treatment such as Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, or Written Exposure Therapy, based on individual need.
People usually come into therapy for a limited time to work through something important. On average, most people will find results with 3-4 months of weekly appointments. Working hard and building new tools in the short term can have long term benefits.
